Here's why VC funds often fail to invest in the best founders: 1. A junior reviews the deck and/or takes the first meeting or whatever the first pass is. Their job is not to pick what they like but to find something the partner wants to see. They second guess. And it's much easier to make a case for a business idea than founder strength. That's much harder to describe and far fewer words. 2. The partner doesn't make decisions in a vacuum. They have to get the support of their peers. They don't want to introduce something they are worried the other partners won't like, no matter how much they like it. They won't risk social capital for an investment. Again, it's much easier to make a case for a business than a founder. 3. At investment committee, the investment memo will have a short section on the founder but the vast majority of it will be on the business. This means the vast majority of the research time was spent on the business (which may prevent inhibit the best founders from getting this far in the first place). It means the vast majority of the investment committee meeting that decides whether or not to invest will be spent on the business, not the founder. Not every fund has all these dynamics. But even with the intention of prioritising founder strength it becomes very hard to achieve it in practice.
