No summary available Positions: CEO at Vercel (2020 - Present) Skills: No skills available Recent Posts: I really enjoyed this conversation. It's the past, present, and future of Vercel in just one hour. Very proud of this milestone. Customers are realizing major cost savings AND performance improvements by leverating our built-in CDN and WAF on Vercel 🫔 Remove expensive redundancies. Deploy globally on Vercel and we handle the rest. My 10 year old, Miles, goes from idea to app in 5 minutes, using Vercel v0. This is getting interesting. You can use the Vercel AI SDK Playground to compare models and test your company's "AI SEO". Enjoy! https://vercel.fyi/play AI chatbots are the new SEO. Vercel helps you optimize for ChatGPT and Claude to crawl your content through our server-side rendering and pre-rendering technology. Vercel dropped an AI/SEO bombshell this week you probably didn't notice. AI crawlers that inform ChatGPT & Claude do NOT render JS yet. Google is the only LLM doing this. So what? You need to SSR/ISR/SSG content that you want AI to know about. As SEO switches to AI chatbot optimization, organic visits to your website might be dramatically reduced if you're not rendering out html for these crawlers. The AI landscape has changed so much for developers. But what’s real vs talk? ā–Ŗļø What models are gaining ground? ā–Ŗļø Where’s inference happening? ā–Ŗļø Are open LLMs deployed IRL? ā–Ŗļø Are devs fine-tuning? ā–Ŗļø Popular frameworks It’s hard to tease out sometimes what people are just talking about or excited about, vs what they’re actually shipping. Take the survey. Can’t wait to share the results with you! Understanding AI crawlers is crucial to the future of the internet & online businesses. As a datapoint, we’ve seen that traffic to Vercel from ChatGPT, while smaller than Google, is 20x more intentful (measured by signup propensity) Check out our research: Stripe's CFO, Steffan Tomlinson, has joined Vercel's Board. This is personally exciting to me. I remember a walk with Naval in the earliest days. After a long pitch, he goes: so, you're building Stripe for Deployment. Stripe raised the bar of what it means to be a Developer-led and Design-centric company. We are complementary in that we care deeply about making it easy to build and ship amazing products, with Vercel powering the app and Stripe the financial infrastructure. Steffan was previously CFO of Google Cloud, Palo Alto Networks and Confluent, pioneering companies in the cloud and infrastructure categories. He's a very down-to-earth and wise guy that I'm enjoying learning from. Geist & Geist Mono by Vercel are now on Google Fonts. Enjoy our open fonts! The Vercel edge infrastructure team cooked. Our new Firewall infrastructure is up to 40x faster to stop DDoS attacks. This is very impressive considering our previous version was already faster than alternatives, frequently mitigating attacks that other CDNs proxy passed to us. Vercel Observability One of my favorite ships of the year āœ“ Built-in, automatic, fast āœ“ Global visibility across projects āœ“ 87% cheaper Monitoring āœ“ Automatic external API latency metrics We made https://lnkd.in/gRTU3SUx even faster. Check it out yourself or see the video below (🟄 before ⬛ after). For context, Next Faster is an open source template that shows off the latest features in Next.js, like Partial Prerendering. It purposefully renders things dynamically and using a database of 1,000,000 AI-generated products to stress test and show the scale of the system. How we did it: Rhys Sullivan fired up react-scan to analyze how frequently we were re-rendering and uncovered some optimizations. There were some unnecessary re-renders especially when hovering. Vercel AI SDK’s multi model & portability capabilities make it a really solid foundation for running evaluation UIs. Below: Anthropic and Google Gemini’s side by side code generation capabilities to reproduce the ā€œhacker newsā€ UI http://web.lmarena.ai — code dropping soon. By Aryan Vichare Reviewing Black Friday / Cyber Monday at all-hands. 0ļøāƒ£ customer incidents. 0ļøāƒ£ downtime. Very proud of the Vercel team – this is no small feat. Vercel has been selected for a Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) with AWS to deliver the next generation of AI-enabled developer tooling and experience. Learn about the partnership—including v0 on AWS Marketplace and more. https://lnkd.in/gm49UhpP One of our large ecom customers switched off third-party-script, client-side-rendering experimentation, as part of their move to Vercel Result: shocking improvement in conversion rates & core web vitals (especially INP). Consumers like fast 😊 99.9992% uptime. That was Vercel's uptime during Black Friday-Cyber Monday, handling 86 billion requests and a peak of 1.9 million requests per second. To put it in perspective, that’s equivalent to: • 4.2 minutes of downtime per year • 21 seconds per month • 0.7 seconds per day (literally, the blink of an eye ). For e-commerce teams, the scalability and stability during high-stakes events like BFCM can define your financial year—and, for some, the business itself. For other teams, reliability isn’t just about peak traffic. It’s about protecting your brand’s reputation and earning trust. This trust isn’t just with your users—it’s with the people across your organisation who rely on your team to deliver and move the company forward. The most wonderful time Starts today ā„ļø Join the Vercel v0 Happy Hour at AWS re:invent with this handy v0: → https://lnkd.in/gnDdmybE The Met museum runs on Vercel. You're gonna notice some pages are buttery smooth to transition to… enter the magic of App Router giving you fast initial load, but with app-like transitions.¹ Some others take longer, like "Art > Curatorial Areas" below. And that's fine. What they're doing is using Vercel as CDN proxy to the old monolith while the transformation continues. This is exactly how I'd do it, and even how we migrated Vercel from Pages Router to App Router. Remember: there's two types of migrations: incremental, and failed ones. ¹ Frameworks like Next.js, SvelteKit, and Nuxt embrace this. Fast transitions ftw! ā›ˆļøŽ The call is coming from inside the cloud The (D)DoS attack landscape of the internet has changed dramatically over the past few years. A lot of attacks on Vercel customers are increasingly coming from within the hyperscalers. Just yesterday we blocked a targeted distributed attack peaking at 1,000s+ of concurrent IPs. We suspect at least 17,949 machines were compromised. A few interesting takeaways: • The clouds are not keeping up. This specific attack pattern has been recurring and the resources they control are significant. • You can't bank on IP reputation signals. These IPs are very high reputation. Vetted customers have been compromised and their machines are being mis-used. We've had to develop very surgical mitigations to prevent impacting legitimate traffic coming from the same ASNs. • Security is the core advantage of managed services. The most likely culprit here is boxes running outdated software in a VM or VPS with manually configured SSH access and networking getting breached. From the provider's perspective, these machines are a black box. It's hard to understand if they're secure, it's hard to help the customer, and it's hard to understand if their traffic patterns are malicious. tl;DR: you can sleep soundly at night that Vercel is both providing you a more secure compute primitive, while also protecting you from these nasty attacks out of the box Create UX with AI with Vercel at Accenture SF AI Studio! Amazing hands-on session with CEO Guillermo Rauch , CTO Malte Ubl , VP of product Jared Palmer , VP of partnerships Jen Shumann Chang šŸ† . Thanks for hosting Christopher J Miller Roberto Beltran and all! Vercel has acquired https://grep.app, the fastest code search engine on the planet, across over 500,000 GitHub repositories. Search grounding has been a key component in scaling up reliable, hallucination-free, and accurate AI systems. Grep will play a key role in enabling AI-based code generation at scale in products like v0 and ones our customers create. We look forward to supporting Grep as a tool developers can enjoy, APIs that Enterprises can integrate into their products, as well as an enhancer of v0 and the Vercel experience. Try it: https://grep.app Announcement: https://vercel.fyi/grep Things that set Vercel Functions apart from other clouds & low-level primitives. āœ“ Server-like concurrency management¹ Aka 'serverless servers' šŸ˜‰. A function that gets spun up on Vercel can handle more than one request. This is ideal for slow I/O like AI models streaming tokens. āœ“ Soft caps, hard caps, & realtime usage² To give you scale and control & peace of mind. For context, we ingest over 6 petabytes of usage data per month that are made available to you to plot and analyze in realtime āœ“ 30,000-100,000+ Function scaling³ On Pro, Vercel can scale up to 30,000 concurrent function instances by default. On Enterprise this is 100,000 by default. Automatic, no quota requests needed. āœ“ Static IPs, VPC Peering, VPNs⁓ With Secure Compute you can very easily make your Functions securely connect to dbs and backends without opening everything to the public internet. āœ“ Cross-region failover⁵ At deploy time we can create functions in backup locations you specify. If the main region goes down (like us-east-1 a year ago), we automatically re-route invocations. āœ“ Cold-start elimination & mitigation⁶ Vercel Functions ship automatic bytecode optimization and on Pro we automatically keep functions warm. This makes cold starts extremely rare, and when they do happen, very fast. On ENT we also extend this to Previews. āœ“ Invocation shielding (ISR)⁷ Imagine you get a major spike of traffic on a page that hasn't been computed yet. Wouldn't it be nice if Vercel could only invoke the compute once and then cache it for reuse? That's ISR! āœ“ After-response compute⁸ With `waitUntil` and `after`, you can do work after the response finishes, without your function freezing. This again works more like a server, but with a very nice API to ensure work is nicely scheduled. āœ“ No limits on logging egress⁹ You can log >4kb and you can send it to any destination. Vercel itself can store and log, or you can drain it to your favorite o11y provider. āœ“ Full Node.js runtime & bring-your-own¹⁰ There are a lot of options in the serverless compute space, but many sacrifice runtime compatibility, ability to version and roll back āœ“ HTTP Streaming and caching by default¹¹ It's just HTTPĀ®. `res.write('hello'); await sleep(5000); res.end('World')` just works. Respond with `Cache-Control` and we cache āœ“ Build and runtime OS & version parity¹² We carefully orchestrate the build and runtime compute in synchrony, including Node.js version changes. This eliminates problems with native deps, glibc divergences, architecture mismatches, etc. āœ“ Multi-region routing and invocation¹³ The "edge" doesn't make a ton of sense to run your application. But it does make sense for people who are serious about perf to have replicated databases throughout the world, in a handful of regions (e.g: one per continent). Vercel makes this trivial. āœ“ Built on world-class infrastructure¹⁓ We proudly partner with the best infra primitive providers in the world like Amazon Web Services (AWS). More to come! We recently moved Vercel builds to our own, faster code execution platform built on Firecracker. One ā€œsmallā€ challenge remained: we offer a feature called Secure Compute so that you can run compute in private networks. This is crucial for stuff like the pre-rendering phase, which might need to connect to internal systems and dbs. On the surface it’s simple: it’s just a build that’s secure! In practice, that simplicity took a bunch of specialized infra work. None of the off-the-shelf solutions worked. We ended up using Linux kernel components like Wireguard & namespaces to build networking overlays from multi-tenant systems → isolated/dedicated customer private networks. (We’ll do a deep-dive on this soon.) This reduced build provisioning times from up to two minutes down to five seconds. A 20x reduction. Customers with security-critical workloads are very happy 😁 https://lnkd.in/dBWsHQ3f Vercel is the standard for modern web applications, used by a million developers, 300,000 companies and 40% of Fortune 500. But Guillermo Rauch doesn't drink his own kool-aid. In this episode of the Pre Seed Show he talks about how he has never met a customer who's wrong. https://lnkd.in/gD8_qHjS Every so often, you work with a company that keeps on providing tools that are just game changers. Vercel is one of those. The new Observability (beta) feature has allowed us to quickly find and optimise caching and requests to 3rd parties. In the coming weeks, we should cut millions of requests to 3rd parties, saving us some bandwidth costs but, more importantly, continuing to improve the site performance. The screenshot is a tweak to caching and data transfer volumes greatly improved. You will hear lots of noise about AI this and AI that, but it is the simplest of features that can make the difference. TodayĀ Vercel was recognized by Gartner as a Visionary in the 2024 GartnerĀ® Magic Quadrantā„¢ for Cloud Application Platforms. First up is Guillermo Rauch, CEO of Vercel, who shares his vision of AI as a rocketship for the mind, driving a shift from content consumption to content creation.šŸš€ Just heard about a large online publisher that migrated from a monolith using Access as a db, to headless on Vercel — talk about a glow up 😁 Core Web Vitals went to green overnight and major boost to SEO traffic. Remember Access? 20 features in 20 prompts: Learn how to build a robust image editor with v0 Join Vercel and Gumroad CEOs, Guillermo Rauch and Sahil Lavingia, for a fireside chat to close out Next.js Conf 2024. They'll discuss the evolution of building web apps: What got us here, the technologies we're leaving behind, and the future of web development with AI. https://lnkd.in/gHqDqEPN The internet was abuzz last week with McMaster-Carr's website being such a great example of performance. Which it is: check it out for yourself at mcmaster.com So, our community set out to recreate it using Next.js. In just a few hours, NextMaster was born. With the help of AI and https://v0.dev, Ethan Niser had a prototype up and running. And then over the weekend, Rhys Sullivan and Arman Kumaraswamy perfected it. NextMaster is open source and a great learning resource on the latest and greatest Next.js capabilities: • Partial Prerendering, which makes all loads snappy • Server-side Streaming, which helps personalize the page without client side JS and performance penalties. This is used for logged-in states and carts. • Prefetching, which makes all the client side loads really snappy. • Image optimization What's more, we set out to demonstrate the scale of Next.js. McMaster-Carr features an impressive 700,000+ product catalog. We used OpenAI's batch inference capabilities to generate 1,000,000 imagined products, complete with titles and descriptions. In short, this app *feels* like a static or CDN-cached website, but it's in reality a fully dynamic, server-rendered experience. While CDNs got us here, the future is in hybrid experiences that don't de-opt to expensive and slow client-side JS rendering. This is a blueprint, I believe, for the future of e-commerce on the web. You can deploy your own to Vercel, or head here and just click around to experience the speed: https://lnkd.in/g3hXg-gx The Vercel Firewall can propagate rules across the entire world in milliseconds. Don't take our word for it though, you can verify it yourself. We built a playground where you can block, unblock, and challenge yourself: https://lnkd.in/g5K-357g Every tech giant has built a version of this in-house, can't take too much credit. But it is nice to be able to share this power with everyone. With the Vercel Toolbar, everyone gets on the same page about what flags are available, they can simulate their enablement, and they can leave comments for developers to address. Truly a superpower. Introducing v0 Team and Enterprise plans—designed for secure and efficient collaboration. • Team: Share Projects, chats, and resources with higher messaging limits • Enterprise: Secure access with SSO and automatic opt-out of data training https://lnkd.in/g27kYN9B If you're in San Francisco and looking for an a new opportunity - we're building up the team working on the economic/billing infrastructure for Vercel and I'd love to talk to you if you have a background in distributed systems design, implementation and you love to ship! I thinkĀ fostering such an environment actually helps the interviewee present the best version of themselves" If you were on the fence about applying to Vercel, there's no time like the present. Are you strategizing "frontier content" for the AI era? Vercel's CEO, Guillermo Rauch, emphasizes this term in delivering exclusive and rapid information to remain relevant, as AI models and bots do not frequent websites and apps like traditional search. Business Insider's Alistair Barr delves into the question-and-answer conundrum in today's changing web landscape. Will this mean using AI to generate that velocity content to stay competitive? Is this a dangerous cycle leading to a larger information gap with AI recycling, repurposing, and creating content without human contributions? #frontiercontent #AI #contentcreation #bots #informationgap
