About
Since I was 15 years old I have been a self-taught student in Machine Learning and Quantum Computing. Over the years I have developed the necessary skills for research and management of interdisciplinary projects, leading communities and democratizing knowledge. Positions: Cofounder & Chief Product Officer at Horizon AI (2024 - Present), Co-Founder & CEO at Syntax AI (2023 - 2023), Founder at Enigma A.I. Qué funciona, qué no, qué aprendí y qué voy a cambiar. Si quieres ser parte de ese grupo y recibir los updates semanales por correo o WhatsApp, solo comenta “Estoy dentro” y te escribo directo. La idea es que tú también puedas influir en cómo se construye esto desde el día uno. I recently exited my $150MM+ annual revenue startup that's raised $200MM in venture funding and discovered something shocking. The way 99% of founders build companies is fundamentally broken. There are 4 funding models, but ONE new model works best in today’s AI era. The traditional models are failing founders: • Venture Capital: Founders often end up with less than 10% ownership and often walk away with nothing personally, even if the company is worth "billions" on paper • Bootstrapping: Founders have to make large personal financial sacrifices and 80% fail within 18 months • Boot-scaling: Founders drain runway and bet everything on a scaling event that fails 72% of the time. However, a small group of smart founders are using a new funding model to build AI-native companies. These founders are reaching $4-6M ARR in a matter of months, and they own 90%-100% of the company. Some are even building $3-5M ARR businesses with zero employees using this exact funding model. So, after talking to 100+ founders, I created an in-depth 10-page guide sharing: • Head-to-head comparison of all four funding models with EXACT metrics • Founder ownership percentages, dilution, and liquidity timelines for each model • How AI has changed what's possible ($3-5M ARR with zero employees) • Expected revenue growth, profitability timelines, and liquidity events • Your probability of success with each funding model (both as a founder and investor) • The psychological reality nobody talks about (what it actually FEELS like) • The shocking difference in founder stress levels and happiness Want the complete breakdown and analysis? • Like and share this post • Comment "Funding" • Subscribe to my Best Hits on Substack and you'll get notified when I post the full breakdown this week: https://lnkd.in/gcR3_SZe Our MIT class “6.S184: Introduction to Flow Matching and Diffusion Models” is now available on YouTube! https://lnkd.in/gEDd3A_p If you have used image/video generators like Stable Diffusion or OpenAI Sora before, then you have already used a flow or diffusion model. We teach these state-of-the-art generative AI algorithms for images, videos, proteins, etc. together with the mathematical tools to understand them. Flow and diffusion models are mathematically demanding subjects - which is why many lectures restrict themselves to teaching high level intuition. Here, we give a mathematically rigorous and self-contained introduction yet aimed at beginners in AI. We hope you will like it! We include: 1. Lecture notes deriving flow matching and diffusion models from scratch (https://lnkd.in/gBSu7SHe) 2. Lecture videos (https://lnkd.in/gM6VQfRd) 3. Labs that guide you to code up your own model from scratch ((https://lnkd.in/gEDd3A_p). In addition, we have wonderful guest lectures from Jason Yim, Benjamin Burchfiel, and Carles Domingo-Enrich. Ezra Erives and I did this class together! It was such a fun project to do together! We are excited to hear your thoughts and comments! Huge shoutout Ashay Athalye from MIT SOUL for helping us with the videos and for Tommi Jaakkola for advising and sponsoring the class! Small teams are the future. Now is the best time ever to launch something with a small team & grow revenue really fast. You can build faster leveraging AI and don't need to raise as much money from VC firms. Tons of new opportunities out there thanks to what's now possible through AI. I'll link to a few lists of ideas in the comments. Here's a list of recent examples: • Cursor by Anysphere: 0 to $100M ARR in 21 months with 20 people • Bolt by StackBlitz: 0 to $20M ARR in 2 months with 15 people • Lovable: 0 to $10M ARR in 2 months with 15 people • Midjourney: 0 to $200M ARR in 2 years with 10 people • Mercor: 0 to $50M ARR in 2 years with 30 people • ElevenLabs: 0 to $100M ARR in 2 years with 50 people • Aragon.ai: 0 to $10M ARR in 2 years with 9 people Who else am I missing? Just had a fascinating lunch with a 22-year-old Stanford grad. Smart kid. Perfect resume. Something felt off though. He kept pausing mid-sentence, searching for words. Not complex words - basic ones. Like his brain was buffering. Finally asked if he was okay. His response floored me. "Sometimes I forget words now. I'm so used to having ChatGPT complete my thoughts that when it's not there, my brain feels... slower." He'd been using AI for everything. Writing, thinking, communication. It had become his external brain. And now his internal one was getting weaker. Made me think about calculators. Remember how teachers said we needed to learn math because "you won't always have a calculator"? They were wrong about that. But maybe they were right about something deeper. We're running the first large-scale experiment on human cognition. What happens when an entire generation outsources their thinking? Don’t get me wrong, I’m beyond excited about what AI and AI agents will do for people in the same way that I was excited in 2009 when the App Store was launched. But thinking out loud you got to think this guy I met with isn't the onnnnnly one that's going to be completely dependent on AI. REALITY: PhD is a HUGE plus for a founder. 1. Look at this list: - Mark Zuckerberg (co-founder of Facebook) dropped out of Harvard - Travis Kalanick (co-founder of Uber) dropped out of UCLA - Jan Koum (co-founder of WhatsApp) dropped out of San Jose State University - Michael Dell (founder of Dell Tech.) dropped out of the University of Texas - Larry Ellison (co-founder of Oracle) left UIUC - Bill Gates (co-founder of Microsoft) dropped out of Harvard - Evan Williams (co-founder of Twitter) left the University of Nebraska - Steve Jobs (co-founder of Apple) dropped out of Reed College SO, being a dropout = success as a founder? “YES” - many young people think. And yet - these are EXCEPTIONS. The average age of a successful entrepreneur is 45. 2. Dropouts are often very passionate. But passion alone can’t turn your startup into a billion-dollar business. What’s important: - Your ability to correctly calculate risks - Your ability to pivot your business fast and multiple times - Your ability to hire, delegate and prioritize. 3. These essential qualities come with experience. This is why very young founders often fail. This is why it may take a few failed startups to succeed. This is why education is so IMPORTANT ! (especially for technical startups) ❗️My advice: Most students see PhD as just a stepping stone into academic or industry positions. But I suggest viewing it as time for YOUR personal development. It helps you build resilience, learn risk taking, and develop technical hyperfocus. If you aim high, these qualities are vital for big innovations. p.s. Data are from the amazing studies by the group of Ilya Strebulaev, a professor at Stanford Business School. #PhD #research #engineering #entrepreneur #scienceandtechnology #biotech When I was a kid, I thought I was dumb While growing up, I had difficulties with humanities subjects (history, geography, you name it). For the longest time I had the idea that I was "too dumb for this" and simply didn't have what it takes to learn such things. As you can imagine, this had a considerable negative impact on my self-esteem. Now, I realize I was wrong. It's not that I couldn't learn such things. The problem was that they were never presented in a way that was right for me. I was given readings that I never wanted to read and never understood because my brain couldn't process information in that way. ...and now, after talking to hundreds of students and teachers, I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. For the longest time we've had to adapt to the learning materials available. I think it's time for learning materials to adapt to us. That's exactly what we're trying to do at Entiendo (Neo ‘23), and that's why I'm extremely happy to announce that our beta version is out! You can try it out at https://entiendo.ai We expect this version to have some errors and not be perfect but we're really excited to share it. Let me know what you think, my DMs are open ----------------- Cuando era niño, pensaba que era tonto. Déjame saber qué te parece, mis DMs están abiertos Oscar Clemente If there's only one diagram I could give as guidance for early founders trying to find THE 'idea' to work on, it would be this. We went through pivot hell multiple times with Co:Helm, and learnt the lessons the hard way. All startups solve problems and the best problems to solve share similar traits. Sequoia Capital has leant into it's decades of company building experience to pull together a fantastic framework how to think about finding the elusive 'PMF'. They put their founders through this during Arc and 1:1 time with Partners. Now they're sharing their learnings for the wider builder community. This diagram is only one part, read the rest here. A seguir rompiéndola. A few people I've talked to that have access to GPT-4 are saying it's a complete game changer... (relative to GPT-3 and anything out there). Some key features mentioned in the article by Alberto Romero García : 1) GPT-4 would be very large (100T parameters) and sparse (in contrast to current dense models; sparsity means that not all neurons are active at any given time, and this approach is more consistent with neural / cognitive models). 2) GPT-4 would be multimodal, accepting text, audio, image, and possibly video inputs (again, multimodality is more aligned with how our brain works). 3) Significant lower training costs relative to GPT-3 (which means better optimization at the software level, faster chips, and/or less computing power used, or many of these advances). The world is being transformed by AI... #gpt3 #gpt4 #ai #artificialintelligence #data #openai #technology #inteligenciaartificial #deeplearning I’m excited to share that I’m starting a new position as the Founder & CEO at Artificio, a new privately-funded Moonshot R&D lab that aims to Solve Visual Intelligence in Humans & Machines and everywhere in between with William Berrios, Colin Conwell and Binxu Wang! We are an international group of scientists working on the fundamental scientific question of "how do we (and other biological/artificial systems) see?", collaborating with many scientists and universities from all over the world and at different academic levels. The technologies that stem from this type of research will allow us to develop novel applications to robust autonomous driving, compositional AI Art, reverse image search, and visual rehabilitation via virtual reality! Check out this twitter thread with more details: https://lnkd.in/ehuv75-i I will be speaking tomorrow at the AI Accelerator Institute Summit in Boston about the current state of Artificio's R&D (on why companies and researchers should care about having brain-aligned models of machine vision) : https://lnkd.in/efuuhFsD , and I will also be flying to the West Coast to give two invited lectures at the University of California, Santa Cruz and Stanford University in the upcoming 2 weeks about our research program. These are new exciting times, and I'm looking forward for where we will be in the near and far future! I owe a really big thank you not only to the Artificio team, collaborators & advisors (N. Apurva Ratan Murty, Tyler Bonnen, Nazim Haouchine, Anne Harrington, Raphaela Kang, John Chin, Patrick Mineault & Ashish Bakshi), but also to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for Brains, Minds and Machines for helping the team with a smooth transition to have an R&D privately funded research lab, and also to Pareto Holdings and Cory Levy for funding our wild dream in the middle of a foggy recession earlier this year.
