It shouldn't be normal and I'm going to say it. It shouldn't be normal for people to be unintentionally unemployed for MONTHS. It shouldn't be normal for it take people three, six, nine, 12, or 18 months to find a job. It shouldn't be normal to have more than three rounds of interviews for entry and mid-level positions. It shouldn't be normal to have to fill out applications, give writing samples, take assessments, sometimes multiple, go through 5 rounds of interviews and still be rejected. It shouldn't be normal for people to have to prematurely withdrawal from their 401ks to survive because their unemployment ran out or they don't qualify. It shouldn't be normal for people with multiple degrees to have to apply for food service and retail jobs because they can't find jobs in their field only to be told be rejected because their overqualified. It shouldn't be normal to require 3-5 years of experience and a college degree for an entry level receptionist position. It shouldn't be normal to spend money you don't have for training or more credentials in the HOPES of landing a better position after months of not being able to land a role similar to or even below the one they lost. It shouldn't be normal to recieve a rejection email less than 3 minutes after submitting a resume. Those of us in the current job market are not being "too picky". We are not lazy. We are not asking for too much. We don't want something we haven't earned. We know our talents, skills, and strengths. We know what we have to offer. Some of us are wracking our brains day and night trying to think of alternative ways of generating income because traditional routes seem impossible to access now. This shouldn't be the new normal and it needs to change NOW. Gentle reminder: Getting laid off is a reflection of the company, not a reflection of your value or brilliance. Earlier this week Netflix dropped Martha - a candid documentary on the unstoppable rise, sudden fall and hard-won comeback of the lifestyle icon Martha Stewart. The documentary is groundbreaking and terrifying all at once. It clearly showed me that through hard-work, sheer determination and passion, a woman can succeed in a man's world. At our company, a 🌴 or ⛔ emoji (among other emojis) in someone's slack status typically means they are out of the office/on PTO. And if you see one of those emojis or, even better, read their slack status and it says "PTO" or "OOO", go ahead and schedule that slack post for when they are back in the office. Now more than ever we need to prioritize giving people the space to enjoy their time off and that means holding off on slacking them while they are out. And while some of you may argue "Just turn off your notifications if you don't want to be bothered", I think it's healthier to use that awesome "schedule send" function that Slack offers.
